Long before football gave ML1 its identity, industry shaped the town.
Steel and iron built Motherwell into one of Scotland's great industrial centres. The furnaces of Ravenscraig lit up the skyline, generations of local families worked in the industry, and the toughness, pride and sense of community it created became part of the town itself.
So when Motherwell FC became known as The Steelmen, it was never just a nickname.
Founded in 1886, the club has always belonged to the people of Motherwell. Through league titles, Scottish Cup triumphs, European nights and the highs and lows that come with supporting your local team, Fir Park has remained a focal point for a community shaped by hard work and resilience. Today, that connection to the community continues through The Well Society, the fan-owned organisation that represents the supporters' voice and keeps the club's community at its heart.
Because some nicknames tell you where a football club comes from. The Steelmen tell you who built it.
